Surprisingly Suitable – Christmas

Surprisingly Suitable – Christmas

2nd December 2018 0 By Allergendad

The run up to Christmas can see a sudden increase in chocolates/cakes/pies and even liqueurs – all highly likely to contain milk, soya or both. A lot of stuff just obviously isn’t suitable but there are always a few surprises hidden away…

Let’s play a game. Have a look at the photo below and see if you can see anything that you think I can eat…

Anything??

Aside from a Jack Daniels miniature set, I’m struggling to make out anything!

But fear not – I’ve found these treats for you…

  • Lidl Favorina Glazed Lebkuchen – this is quite a surprise a chocolate coated gingerbread with no milk or soya lecithin… In fact, Lidl is pretty good at Christmas – several (all though by no means all) of the Favorina range are suitable
  • Waitrose Lambertz Pfeffernusse (iced gingerbread cookie) – it’s not for me to say how good these are. Let’s just say we’re already on our third bag!
  • Lidl Favorina Spiced Almond Biscuits – Lidl’s second entry on the list. These are basically Lotus Caramelised Biscuits without the soya – they come in quite large packets. Worryingly large packets for how good they taste…
  • Marks and Spencer’s Swiss Dark Chocolate Mountain Bar – I think this one only needs 6 words: Dark Chocolate Dairy, Soya free Toblerone!!
  • Asda Mince Pies – Not ‘free from’ or ‘gluten free’ or anything special… Asda’s standard mince pies just happen to be soya and dairy free.

I feel I should give a specific mention to Lidl here. I’ve tried to create a list of items from a range of shops but in truth I could have made a top 10 of Lidl’s Favorina range alone. I’m not sure whether they avoid some of the common allergens for allergy reasons or something else (they certainly aren’t sold as anything-free in the shop), but the range is fantastic for our requirements. Not everything is suitable and some of the items in the photo below I haven’t even tried yet, but if you’re avoiding milk or soya its well worth a visit.

Christmas? Sorted! All this for less than £15 too!

Lastly, please, please check any ingredients yourself before buying. Recipes can change and I can be an idiot. The guilt of every getting it wrong for my son is enough. I wouldn’t want to add to that burden!
